Track Performs Well on First Day at Open New England Championships

BOSTON, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's track and field team broke one school record and turned in several season bests on the first day of competition at the Open New England Championships at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center Friday.

Senior Matt Hinthorne (Braintree, MA/Braintree HS) broke the school record when he finished 11th at 800 meters in 1:53.24. Sophomore Matt Ferro (Halifax, MA/Silver Lake HS) ran the second fastest time in school history when he finished 20th at 1000 meters in 2:31.47, freshman Brendan Jarousky (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) ran the third fastest time in school history at 200 meters when he was 26th in 22.60 seconds, and senior Gerald Arneaud (Dorchester, MA/Newton South HS) equaled his season best when he was 19th at 400 meters in 49.77 seconds.

Junior Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS/Stonehill) finished 10th in the weight throw with a throw of 48 feet.

"All four guys ran their season bests for the year, and that's what you want to do at the end of the year," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "We're pleased with how they performed today. For Krista, it's the first time all year she hasn't improved over her previous performance, and she'll be ready next week."

The meet will conclude Saturday.
