Corsairs Open Outdoor Season at Bridgewater State Invitational

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth track and field squads sent several representatives to compete in the first outdoor meet of the season at the Bridgewater State Invitational, as the Corsairs battled rainy conditions and nevertheless collected numerous top-10 finishes.

In the Field
The Corsairs led a 1-2 finish in the hammer throw, with junior Jared Louf-Woods (Salem, Mass.) and senior Greg Betsold (Turners Falls, Mass.) taking the top marks. Louf-Woods marked at 163-03 (49.77m) to finish first, surpassing his previous outdoor personal best by over 20 feet. Betsold improved his mark from last year's first outdoor meet, posting a distance of 157-04 (47.96m) to wrap up second.

Louf-Woods finished his day by also collecting the top place in the shot put, besting the field of 42 at 49-0.25 (14.94m). Sophomore Nicholas Caswell (Dartmouth, Mass.) was a top-10 finisher, placing ninth at 41-0.50 (12.51m). In the discus, Betsold added to his total by finishing fifth, tossing a distance of 125-07 (38.29m).

Sophomore Joao Baptista (Somerville, Mass.) started his outdoor season on a strong note, clearing 6-1.5 (1.87m) to sit only behind Merrimack's Trevor Ciempa in the field of 15. In the women's competition, freshman Danielle Devine (Bernardston, Mass.) leaped 4-9.75 (1.47m) to finish in a three-way tie for third place out of 12.

Junior Madison Boucher (Southampton, Mass.) and sophomore Taryn Carley (Kingston, Mass.) both collected ninth in their respective events. Boucher marked in with a 15-foot personal best in the hammer throw, tossing 122-01 (37.21m), and Carley put forward a 114-11 (35.04m) performance in the javelin.

Two Corsairs, sophomore Stephen Tencati (Clinton, Mass.) and junior John Kleczkowski (North Attleboro, Mass.), finished amongst the top 10 in the men's javelin. Tencati, who represented UMass Dartmouth in the event at last year's NCAA Division III Championships, took fifth at 184-07 (56.27m) and Kleczkowski sixth at 181-11 (55.44m).

On the Track

UMass Dartmouth had two runners represent the men in the 5,000-meter run, and both placed in the top 10 of 43 competitors. Sophomore Jason Karakaedos (Peabody, Mass.) finished in personal-best fashion, placing sixth in 15:48.27, while senior Sean Herlihy (Walpole, Mass.) took eighth, tripping the timer in 15:52.67.

Wrapping up the to-10 performances was junior Spencer Lynds (Solon, Maine), who collected fourth in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking in at 60:41.
