WESTFIELD, Mass./NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Both UMass Dartmouth outdoor track & field teams recorded fourth place team finishes at the Westfield State Jerry Gravel Invitational to cap a busy weekend of competition in two states.
Senior Joao Baptista (Malden, Mass.) won the high jump (1.90 meters/6 feet, 2 ¾ inches) and placed third in the long jump (6.12 meters/20 feet, 1 inch) for the 15th-ranked Corsair men’s squad, while the tandem of junior Jordan Entwistle (Northboro, Mass.) and senior Steve Tencati (Clinton, Mass.) finished 1-2 once again the javelin with respective marks of 60.09 meters/197 feet, 2 inches & 55.49 meters/182 feet, 1 inch.
Junior Travis Dolcine (Somerville, Mass.) and senior Jason Karakaedos (Peabody, Mass.) finished 2-3 in the 800 meters for UMass Dartmouth with respective times of 2:01.93 and 2:02.62, while freshmen Steve Stromski (Melrose, Mass.) and Kaiden Swainamer (Lakeville, Mass.) recorded respective runner-up performances in the 1,500 meters (4:10.21) and shot put (14.80 meters/48 feet, 6 ¾ inches). Freshman Andrew Swallow (Framingham, Mass.) posted a third place finish in the discus (39.40 meters/129 feet, 3 inches) and a fourth place performance in the hammer throw (42.23 meters/138 feet, 6 inches) on the day, while sophomore DJ Machado (Swansea, Mass.) and freshman Edward Lundy (Lawrence, Mass.) notched fourth place finishes in the 200 (22.53, the 10th fastest time in school history) and 100 (11.27) meters.
The Corsair 4 x 400 meter relay tandem of Karakaedos, Dolcine, sophomore Josh Brockman (Fall River, Mass.) and freshman Jose LeClerc-Rodriguez (Chelsea, Mass.) finished second with a time of 3:28.50, as UMass Dartmouth posted a total of 34 points in the final team standings. Host Westfield State took top honors with a score of 69 points, while Utica and Bridgewater State tied for second with 50 points each.
Junior Danielle Devine (Bernardston, Mass.) led the way on the women’s side for the Corsairs by placing first in the high jump (1.50 meters/4 feet, 11 inches) and fourth in the long jump (4.67 meters/15 feet, 8 ¾ inches), while senior Ciara Anderson (Medway, Mass.) took top honors in the 5,000 meters (20:25.87). Senior Kirstie Harnden (Fitchburg, Mass.), junior MacKenzie Garvey (Plymouth, Mass.) and sophomore Emilea Lauzon (Lakeville, Mass.) recorded third place performances in the 1,500 meters (5:26.18), shot put (11.80 meters/38 feet, 8 ¾ inches) and 400 meters (1:02.69) for UMass Dartmouth, which received fourth place finishes from junior Caitlyn Demers (Dartmouth, Mass.) and freshman Jackie Broderick (Wilmington, Mass.) in the 100 meters (13.38) and 800 meters (2:37.95). The Corsairs posted a team score of 19 points in the competition, as Utica (75) claimed the top spot by 10 points over host Westfield State.
Three UMass Dartmouth track standouts competed in elite events on Friday evening at the Connecticut College Silfen Invitational, as junior George Papoulis (Haverhill, Mass.) was fourth of 41 entrants in the 800 meters with a time of 1:53.99. Sophomore Bruno Pires (New Bedford, Mass.) was ninth of 26 competitors in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:01.04, while sophomore Taylor Walsh (Groveland, Mass.) ran the eighth fastest women’s 800 meter time in school history with a mark of 2:23.77 that was good for 18th place in a field of 39 runners.
Both Corsair teams return to action next Saturday morning by heading to Medford, Mass. to compete at the Tufts Sunshine Classic beginning at 10:00 am.
