Corsair Women 13th At New England Division III Championships

NORTHAMPTON, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's indoor track and field team finished 13th at the New England Division III Championships at the Smith College Indoor Track and Tennis Facility Saturday.

The Corsairs scored 24 points in the meet.

In the shot put, sophomore Jessica Masse (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) finished second at 41 feet, five inches, while senior Brittany Cole (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) was 10th at 37-2 1/4. Freshman Katie Sheehan (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) was fourth at 800 meters in a school record time of 2:18.10. Junior Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) was fifth at 60 meters in 7.95 seconds, sophomore Ezra Banks (Boston, MA/Newton South HS) finished in 8.10 seconds, and sophomore Isabel Pierre (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/West Roxbury, MA) ran the race in 8.44 seconds.

Van Ness finished sixth at 200 meters in 26.03 seconds. In the mile, senior Meaghan Bohigian (Barre, MA/Quabbin Regional HS) was seventh in the mile in 5:11.15, while senior Courtney Testa (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) finished in 5:13.98 and freshman Carolyn Cornell (Abington, MA/Cardinal Spellman HS) finished in 5:26.46. The 4 x 800 meter relay team of Cornell, Testa, Sheehan and Bohigian was seventh in 9:48.36.

Sophomore Kim Urena (Marlborough, MA/Marlborough HS) ran 400 meters in 61.96 seconds, while Banks triple jumped 33 feet, 8 12 inches and sophomore Lauren Roche (Norfolk, MA/King Philip Regional HS) came in at 33-5 3/4. In the weight throw, Masse threw 44 feet, 2 3/4 inches, a personal best and a mark ranking second on the all-time list at UMD, while Cole threw 39-2 1/4.

"I thought we did very well," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Jon Hird, who accompanied the women to the meet. "Our team has competed well at every meet this season, and I'm pretty proud of what they did. Any time you have a championship meet like this, with a lot of people doing well, it's a good sign."

The Corsairs will return to action at the Open New England Championships next weekend.
