CAMBRIDGE, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's got some strong performances from their women's indoor track and field team at the New England Division III Championships at MIT's Steinbrenner Stadium Saturday.
The women scored 11 points in the meet.
Freshman Jessica Masse (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) was third in the shot put at 40 feet, 6 3/4 inches, while junior Brittany Cole (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) came in at 35-7. In the 55 meter dash, freshman Ezra Banks (Boston, MA/Newton South HS) was sixth in 7.44 seconds, while sophomore Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) was eighth in 7.48 seconds after running a personal best 7.47 in the trials. The 4 x 200 meter relay team of Van Ness, freshman Lauren Roche (Norfolk, MA/King Phillip Regional HS), senior Briley Morrill (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson HS) and Banks set a school record when they finished eighth in 1:49.59. Junior Meagan Bohigian (Barre, MA/Quabbin Regional HS) was 11th at 1000 meters in 3:06.98, Van Ness was 14th at 200 meters in 27.03 seconds, senior Linee Mello-Frost (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) was 13th in the 55 meter hurdles in 8.87 seconds, and Banks was 27th in triple jump at 33 feet, four inches.
"I thought we competed well," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Jon Hird, who accompanied the team to MIT. "We've competed well all year. Ezra and Jill had personal bests, Linee hurdled her best, the relay set a school record, and Jessica Masse came in third. Sometimes at a meet like this, you don't have the same focus that you did at your conference meet, but I didn't see that here today. We came to compete and did very well."
The Corsairs will return to action at the Open New England Division III Championships next weekend.
