Three Earn LEC Weekly Track and Field Honors

Jan. 31, 2011

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Three members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's indoor track and field team have been honored by the Little East Conference.

Senior Eric Nygaard (Medway, MA/Medway HS) has been named LEC Men's Track Athlete of the Week, freshman Chris Perry (Attleboro, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS/BCC) has been named LEC Men's Rookie Field Athlete of the Week, and freshman Jessica Masse (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) has been named LEC Women's Rookie Field Athlete of the Week. It was the third consecutive week that Nygaard and Perry were honored. The awards were based on their performances at last weekend's Boston University Terrier Invitational.

Perry finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 48 feet. His effort set a school record and brought him within three inches of automatically qualifying for the NCAA Division III Championships. Nygaard finished 43rd in the mile, while posting the second best indoor mark at UMass Dartmouth. He qualified for both the New England Division III Championships and the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships. Masse finished seventh in the shot put at 40 feet, seven inches.

"Chris Perry continues to improve, and he is willing to make improvements in areas that he needs to improve in," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "He is open to new ideas, and is putting in the work to make that happen. Eric Nygaard just missed the school record in the mile. He runs with a lot of passion in his races, he is in a groove right now, and we're very pleased with how he is racing as a senior. In Jessica Masse's case, for a freshman to be in the finals of the Terrier Invitational is quite an accomplishment on her part. Right now, she is the number one freshman thrower in the country in Division III. Hopefully, she will continue to improve as the season progresses."

The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Tufts Saturday. .
