Feb. 23, 2009

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-A member of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's track and field team has been honored by the Little East Conference for the first time this season.

Freshman Alison O'Rourke (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) has been named Little East Conference Women's Rookie Track Athlete of the Week.

O'Rourke tied for 11th in the long jump at Saturday's New England Division III Championships with a leap of 16 feet, 1 3/4 inches, while finishing 10th in the 55 meter hurdles in a personal best time of 9.27 seconds.

"Alison has had a really strong freshman year, considering she only ran one season of track in high school," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "She ran outdoors last year at Weymouth, and this is her first year of indoor track. It speaks to her talent and ability to accomplish what she has in less than one year of track and field competition."

UMass Dartmouth will return to action this weekend at the Open New England Championships.
