NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Four members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's outdoor track and field team have been honored by the Little East Conference.
Senior Eric Nygaard (Medway, MA/Medway HS) was named Little East Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week, sophomore Matt Hinthorne (Braintree, MA/Braintree HS) was named LEC Men's Rookie Track Athlete of the Week, freshman Joe Texeira (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) was named Men's Rookie Field Athlete of the Week, and freshman Ezra Banks (Boston, MA/Newton South HS) was named Women's Rookie Track Athlete of the Week.
At Saturday's Silfen Invitational, hosted by Connecticut College, Nygaard finished first at 1500 meters in 4:02.70, qualifying for the New England Division III Championships. Hinthorne was third at 800 meters in 2:00.12, Texeira finished first in the javelin throw with a toss of 163 feet, one-half inch, and Banks was first at 100 meters in 13.44 seconds and second in the long jump at 15 feet, 5 1/2 inches.
"Eric ran a very good race outdoors, considering the weather and the extra gear he seemed to have. This was his second serious race of the outdoor season, and it bodes well for the future. Joe threw in horrible conditions where most people were 30 or 40 feet off their seasonal best. He had a dominant performance compared to the rest of the field. Matt has been battling injuries, and his training has been limited, and his performance speaks to his natural talent and competitive spirit. Ezra's 100 was more noteworthy because she eased up 20 meters out because one of her teammates fell. The conditions explained what happened, and she had a complete day in the rain."
The Corsairs will return to action when they travel to Fitchburg State for the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships next Saturday.
