NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team won their seventh straight match as they took down visiting Eastern Nazarene, 3-1, on Tuesday evening in a non-conference match at the Tripp Athletic Center.
After dropping the first set, the Corsairs rallied to take the next three defeating Eastern Nazarene, 24-26, 25-16 25-22 and 25-16 for their fifth straight victory over the Lions.
Once again, senior setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) led the way for the Corsairs with 36 assists. Freshman outside hitter Stephanie Antoine (New Bedford, MA/Greater New Bedford Vo Tech HS) continued her strong play leading the team in kills with 21, while junior outside hitter Tahirah Gibson (Norwood, MA/Norwood HS) added seven kills. Freshmen outside hitters Brianna Perry (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) and Linsay Boulay (Swansea, MA/Case HS) each added six kills.
Defensively, freshman Alexis Ruest (Coventry, RI/Coventry HS) led the way with 12 digs, while Boulay added 10 of her own.
"It was nice to see a young team come back and defeat a team they have already played, especially with such a quick turnaround," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "The first set we gave away too many points and didn't control the ball very well, but after that we rebounded well and were the better ball control team. It's nice to be 7-0, but as I told the team our next nine matches are all away from home and we are going to see how we handle the long bus rides and road atmosphere."
The Corsairs improved to 7-0 with the victory, while the Lions dropped to 6-3. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they travel to Southern Maine to meet the Huskies and Worcester State Saturday. Eastern Nazarene will host Newbury Wednesday. .
