NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team swept a pair of matches on the road Saturday, defeating host Southern Maine and Worcester State at the Huskies' Warren Hill Gymnasium.
The Corsairs downed the Huskies, 25-6, 25-14, 18-25 and 25-11, then defeated the Lancers, 20-25, 25-21, 19-25, 26-24 and 15-11.
Against USM, freshman outside hitter Eliza Bowes (West Yarmouth, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth HS) had eight kills, while freshman outside hitter Brianna Perry (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) and sophomore outside hitter Madison Shea (Millis, MA/Millis HS) each had five. Senior setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had 19 assists and three service aces, junior middle blocker Tahirah Gibson (Norwood, MA/Norwood HS) had six blocks, and freshman outside hitter Linsay Boulay (Swansea, MA/Case HS) had 18 digs.
In the match against the Lancers, Perry had 16 kills, while Bowes added 11. Goncalves had 40 assists, Gibson had five blocks, and Perry, Boulay and freshman libero Alexis Ruest (Coventry, RI/Coventry HS) each had 16 digs.
"We dug a lot of balls, and kept a lot of shots in play," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "We fell behind against Worcester State, 2-1, and then we played hard in the fourth and fifth sets."
The Corsairs improved to 9-0 and 1-0 in LEC action with the victory, while the Huskies dropped to 3-6 and 0-1 in LEC play, and WSU is 4-5.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Newbury Tuesday. .
