Women's Volleyball Sweeps Newbury, 3-0

BROOKLINE, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team won their tenth straight contest as they swept host Newbury 3-0 at the Hellenic College Gymnasium Tuesday evening.

The Corsairs downed the Nighthawks 25-18, 25-16 and 25-20 for their third straight road win.
Freshman outside hitter Stephanie Antoine (New Bedford, MA / Greater New Bedford Vo Tech) led the offensive attack for the Corsairs with 12 kills in 16 swings, while fellow freshman outside hitter Eliza Bowes (West Yarmouth, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth HS) contributed 7 kills. Senior setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) continued her strong play with 27 assists.
Defensively, freshman outside hitter Carina Filosa (Milford, MA/Milford HS) played her strongest game of the season leading the team with 11 digs. Junior middle blocker Tahirah Gibson (Norwood, MA/Norwood HS) helped keep the Nighthawks off balance from the service line.
"I was pleased with our effort once again," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "We started slowly and they were jump serving us to take the lead at the beginning of the set. Part of our comeback was thanks to the serving of Tahirah Gibson, who did a good job in the back row."
The Corsairs improved to 10-0 with the victory, while the Nighthawks dropped to 5-5 with the defeat.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Bridgewater State Thursday.
