BABSON PARK, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team split a pair of matches against host Babson and Massachusetts Maritime in a tri-match at Staake Gymnasium Saturday.
The Corsairs fell to the Beavers, 25-13, 25-14 and 25-19, then defeated the Buccaneers, 26-24, 25-21 and 25-8.
In the opener, senior setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS), freshman outside hitter Eliza Bowes (West Yarmouth, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth HS) and freshman outside hitter Brianna Perry (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) each had three kills, while Perry had eight digs and freshman outside hitter Linsay Boulay (Swansea, MA/Case HS)added seven. Against Mass Maritime, sophomore outside hitter Madison Shea (Millis, MA/Millis HS) had seven kills, freshman setter Rebecca Larson (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) had seven assists, sophomore setter Caitlin Bien (Millbury, MA/Millbury HS) added five assists, and junior middle blocker Tahirah Gibson (Norwood, MA/Norwood HS) added four blocks.
"We were extremely inefficient in the first two sets against Babson," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "Basically, we had as many hitting errors as we had kills, our ball control was shaky, and we gave away too many points. We played significantly better in the third set. In the second match, we gave some of our reserves a chance to play, and they played well."
The Corsairs are now 14-2, while Babson is now 12-3 and Mass Maritime is 1-14.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Rhode Island College Tuesday evening.
