NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Visiting Rhode Island College came from behind in the first set and edged the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team, 25-23, 27-25 and 25-23, in a Little East Conference match at the Tripp Athletic Center Tuesday evening.
The Anchorwomen overcame a 13-3 deficit in the opener and rallied to win.
For the Corsairs, senior setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had 27 assists, freshman outside hitter Brianna Perry (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had 14 kills, and freshman outside hitter Stephanie Antoine (New Bedford, MA/Greater New Bedford Vo tech HS) added eight kills. Defensively, freshman outside hitter Linsay Boulay (Swansea, MA/Case HS) had 16 digs and junior middle blocker Tahirah Gibson (Norwood, MA/Norwood HS) added six blocks.
"It was disappointing, but it wasn't a case of us playing badly, they cranked it up," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "We only had four service errors and only two receiving errors, but we didn't click offensively as well as we would have liked. We got a lot of touches, but we weren't always able to control them.
It's tough when you lose three by two points; it basically tells you that all three were winnable. It's our first loss at home this season, so that's disappointing, but they're a better team than their record shows."
The Corsairs dropped to 14-3 and 1-2 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while RIC improved to 7-11 and 1-2 in the LEC with the victory.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Curry Friday evening. RIC will visit Eastern Nazarene Thursday.
