NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Visiting Eastern Connecticut State held off a late rally and defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team in four sets in a Little East Conference match at the Tripp Athletic Center Tuesday evening.
The Warriors triumphed, 25-17, 25-21, 19-25 and 25-16.
The Corsairs' lone senior, setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS), had 35 assists, seven digs and two solo blocks on Senior Night. Freshman outside hitter Stephanie Antoine (New Bedford, MA/Greater New Bedford Vo Tech HS) had 14 kills, while junior middle hitter Tahirah Gibson (Norwood, MA/Norwood HS) added nine.
"We just got off to a slow start," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "We cranked it up in the second set and even more in the third set, and then they started to wear us down. Our lone senior had a solid game; she was pushing everyone else right to the end, which is why she is such a good leader. Eastern Connecticut is a good team."
The Corsairs dropped to 20-6 and 1-5 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while the Warriors improved to 16-12 and 4-3 in LEC action with the victory.
The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Rivier Thursday evening. The Warriors will host Wesleyan Thursday.
