QUINCY, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team earned their first win of the season on the road Wednesday evening. The Corsairs swept host Eastern Nazarene, 25-22, 25-15 and 25-20 at the Lahue Physical Education Center.
For UMass Dartmouth, freshman setter Christina Spinazola (Medway, MA/Medway HS) had 20 assists and nine digs, sophomore outside hitter Eliza Bowes (West Yarmouth, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth HS) had nine kills, while senior outside hitter Kelly Lyons (Bourne, MA/Bourne HS) and senior middle blocker Tahirah Gibson (Norwood, MA/Norwood HS) each had seven kills. Lyons and Gibson each had two blocks, while sophomore libero Carina Filosa (Milford, MA/Milford HS) added 11 digs.
"Christina showed great leadership, and did a very good job of distributing the ball," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "We got outstanding performances from Kelly Lyons and Eliza Bowes. Kelly had the best match of her career, and she and Eliza provided outstanding leadership. We were able to string points together and not let them make a big run on us. (Junior) Rachel Frederickson (Marston Mills, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth HS) put together a great service run in the second set, she went in and served 10 points in a row, including three aces."
The Corsairs improved to 1-4 with the victory, while the Lions dropped to 2-7 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Mount Holyoke in a tri-match with Westfield State Saturday. Eastern Nazarene will travel to Anna Maria Saturday for a pair of matches.
