SOUTH HADLEY, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team dropped both ends of their tri-match to host Mount Holyoke and Westfield State at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium Saturday. The Corsairs fell to WSU, 25-23, 25-21 and 25-15, and then lost to the Lyons, 25-23, 25-21 and 25-19.
Against the Owls, sophomore outside hitter Brianna Perry (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) led the way with nine kills, while sophomore outside hitters Eliza Bowes (West Yarmouth, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth HS) and Katie McEachern (Wrentham, MA/King Philip HS) each had seven. Freshman setter Christina Spinazola (Medway, MA/Medway HS) had 19 assists, Perry and sophomore libero Carina Filosa (Milford, MA/Milford HS) each had 10 digs, and senior outside hitter Kelly Lyons (Bourne, MA/Bourne HS) and freshman middle blocker Cara Butcher (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow HS) each had three blocks.
Against Mount Holyoke, Spinazola had 22 assists and 15 digs, junior outside hitter Madison Shea (Millis, MA/Millis HS) had seven kills, Filosa had 20 digs and Perry had 14, and Bowes had six service aces.
"We just couldn't get over the hump," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "We need to do a better job of putting points together and not giving up easy points, and we need to be more consistent. We work hard to get points, and then we give them away too easily. It's been a tough start, but we have three home matches next week."
The Corsairs are now 1-6, Mount Holyoke is 8-0 and Westfield State is 5-4. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Bridgewater State Thursday evening.
