Volleyball Blanks Mass. Maritime, 3-0

DARTMOUTH, Mass.  – The Corsairs volleyball team snapped a three-game losing streak on Thursday evening, cruising to a straight-set victory over Mass. Maritime at the Tripp Athletic Center.

How It Happened  

Junior Amanda LaCroix (East Freetown, Mass.) and sophomore Nicole Silverman (Chelmsford, Mass.) combined for 27 kills to help propel the Corsairs past the Buccaneers by the 25-17, 25-19, 25-11 scores.  

The Corsairs opened the first set by controlling the five of the first six points as a couple of kills from LaCroix gave the hosts the early advantage. While leading in the set 21-17, the Corsairs rattled off four quick points as kills from Silverman and sophomore Colleen Riley (Mansfield, Mass.) capped off the first game.  

In the second, the Corsairs got out to a similar lead to open up, taking a 6-3 advantage early on as a few errors from Mass. Maritime resulted in easy points. With the match at 12-10, UMass Dartmouth got a surge from Silverman as back-to-back kills gave the team some momentum. After allowing consecutive points, the Corsairs shut the door on the second set with the score at 24-19 on a Buccaneer attack error.   

UMass Dartmouth made short work of the final set, opening with a 9-4 lead as LaCroix and Silverman combined for five kills in the span. While leading 15-8, the Corsairs went on its largest run of the match, scoring eight unanswered points with Riley Thomas (Fairhaven, Mass.) and Riley accompanying Lacroix and Silverman with kills. Silverman delivered the final two points to close the match, both coming on kills to earn the clean sweep.  

Inside the Numbers

  • Silverman led the Corsair attack game with 15 kills on a season-high .314 attack percentage, chipping in nine digs.
  • LaCroix slammed down 13 kills, hitting .250 to go along with seven digs.
  • Freshman Tashneal Africa (Chelsea, Mass.) recorded all three of UMass Dartmouth's blocks on the night.
  • The Corsairs finished the game with 38 kills and a .198 attack percentage, generating double-digit kills in all three sets.
