DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Senior Kelley Guerra (Randolph, N.J.) notched 13 kills, seven digs and three total blocks to lead Emerson to a sweep of a college volleyball tri-match from host UMass Dartmouth and Castleton Saturday afternoon at the Tripp Athletic Center. The Corsairs opened the day with a 3-0 Little East Conference triumph over the Spartans on the strength of nine kills and six digs from senior Amanda LaCroix (East Freetown, Mass.).
Sophomore Grace Tepper (Kensington, Md.) registered 11 kills and eight digs in the Lions’ 25-13, 25-16, 25-15 sweep of UMass Dartmouth (8-13, 1-5 LEC), while sophomore Albany Alexander (Orlando, Fla.) chipped in with eight kills in the triumph. Guerra added four kills and three total blocks for Emerson, which received 26 set assists and seven digs from senior Moira Brennan (Glenview, Ill.), 14 digs and four service aces from freshman Lauren Quan (San Diego, Calif.) as well as 11 digs from senior Fara Cohen (Morristown, N.J.).
Senior Kristy Walton (Fairhaven, Mass.) posted eight kills and three digs in the nightcap setback for the Corsairs, who received four kills and 14 digs from LaCroix along with three kills from freshman Mallory Singer (Succasunna, N.J.). Junior Jordan Rittberger (Huntington, N.Y.) added 17 set assists and six digs for UMass Dartmouth, which received 13 digs from junior Jillian Sykora (Waterford, Conn.).
Guerra collected nine kills, seven digs and three service aces in Emerson’s 25-9, 25-8, 25-5 sweep of Castleton (2-15, 0-5 LEC), as the Lions received eight kills and three digs from freshman Anna Hamre (Cypress, Calif.) along with seven kills, eight digs and a pair of service aces from junior Jessica Braunstein (Demarest, N.J.). Freshman Grace Hutchison (Reinholds, Pa.) added six kills and six digs in the middle match for Emerson, which received 26 set assists from junior Jamie Groele (Chelmsford, Mass.) along with 19 digs and eight service aces from Quan. Sophomores Shannon Manchester (West Hartford, Conn.) and Gabrielle Carpenter (Vernon, Vt.) each had two kills and two digs in the second setback for the Spartans, who received three set assists and four digs from senior Brianna Hake (St. George, Vt.) along with six digs from sophomore Meghan Zawatsky (Chelmsford, Mass.).
Walton, Singer and freshman Molly Porch (New Hartford, Conn.) each had five kills in the Corsairs’ 25-14, 25-12, 25-12) Little East victory over Castleton, as Singer chipped in with five of the hosts’ 21 service aces in the contest. Junior Samantha Sedano (Valley Glen, Calif.) added a pair of kills and six digs for UMass Dartmouth, which received 12 assists each from Rittberger and sophomore Riley Thomas (Fairhaven, Mass.), 11 digs from Sykora and a combined nine digs from freshmen Leira Vasquez (New Bedford, Mass.) and Sara Orton (Swansea, Mass.).
Manchester notched three kills and four digs in the opening setback for the Spartans, who received two kills from Carpenter and three set assists, three digs and a pair of service aces from Hake. Zawatsky added five digs for Castleton, which also received five digs each from sophomore Ellie Frischmon (Chisago Lakes, Minn.) and freshman Lena Soehnle (Bad Sackingen, Germany).
UMass Dartmouth hosts Emmanuel in a non-league outing on Thursday evening at the Tripp Athletic Center beginning at 7:00 pm, while Castleton heads to Cobleskill, N.Y. on Wednesday evening for a non-league match with SUNY-Cobleskill that also begins at 7:00 pm. Emerson travels to Nashua, N.H. on Thursday evening to square off with Rivier in a non-league clash beginning at 7:00 pm.
