DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Junior Nicole Silverman (Chelmsford, Mass.) registered 17 kills and 16 digs to lead UMass Dartmouth to a sweep of a non-league college volleyball tri-match from Lesley and Salem State by identical 3-0 finals Saturday afternoon at the Tripp Athletic Center.
Silverman notched 11 kills, three digs and three service aces in the host Corsairs’ (4-0) opening 25-14, 25-12, 25-20 victory over Lesley (1-2), as fellow junior Samantha Sedano (Valley Glen, Calif.) added six kills and two service aces for the winners. Senior Amanda LaCroix (East Freetown, Mass.) collected five kills, 12 digs and two services aces in the lid-lifter for UMass Dartmouth, which received four kills from senior Kristy Walton (Fairhaven, Mass.). Junior Jordan Rittberger (Huntington, N.Y.) recorded 20 set assists and two service aces in the opening sweep for the Corsairs, who received 15 digs from junior Jillian Sykora (Waterford, Conn.) and are off to their best start in six years.
Walton posted 10 kills in UMass Dartmouth’s 25-20, 25-15, 25-23 nightcap victory over Salem State (2-3), which swept a 3-0 middle match decision from Lesley by scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 25-19. LaCroix added eight kills and five digs for the Corsairs, who received six kills, 13 digs and three service aces from Silverman along with five kills and five service aces from Sedano. Freshman Molly Porch (New Hartford, Conn.) also registered five kills in the nightcap for the hosts, who received 30 set assists and four digs from Rittberger along with 12 digs from Sykora.
Junior Emily Hennessy (Hanover, Mass.) collected four kills and eight digs in the nightcap setback for Salem State, which received four kills and four digs from senior Jasmine Severino (Lawrence, Mass.). Sophomore Danielle Joseph (Waltham, Mass.) added three kills for the Vikings, who received a combined 13 set assists and nine digs from senior Mackenzie Salls (Turners Falls, Mass.) and junior Morgan Adams (Scotia, N.Y.). Severino posted eight kills in Salem State’s middle match win over Lesley, as the Vikings also received seven kills and five digs from Hennessy along with six kills and 10 digs from sophomore Darcy McDowell (Goshen, N.Y.). Salls added 20 set assists in the win for Salem State, which received seven digs from senior Dina Roman (Iawkuni, Japan).
Junior Cassidy Wygonik (Madison, Conn.) notched seven kills and five digs in Lesley’s opening setback to UMass Dartmouth, as the Lynx also received a combined 11 set assists and 10 digs from sophomore Tallin Goldberg (Merrimack, N.H.) and freshman Maile Counts (Vista, Calif.) along with 10 digs from junior Wing Li (Quincy, Mass.). Counts and Wygonik each had eight kills in the middle match setback for Lesley, while Goldberg added 12 set assists for the Lynx in that contest.
UMass Dartmouth hosts Elms in a non-league match on Thursday evening at the Tripp Athletic Center beginning at 6:00 pm, while Lesley travels to Medford, Mass. on Thursday evening to take on Fisher in a non-league outing that begins at 7:00 pm. Salem State heads to Buzzards Bay, Mass. on Tuesday evening to square off with Massachusetts Maritime in its Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference opener beginning at 7:00 pm.
