NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team defeated visiting Eastern Nazarene in three games, 25-13, 25-7 and 25-14, in the 2010 season opener for both teams at the Tripp Athletic Center Thursday evening.
Junior Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS) led the Corsairs with nine kills, while senior outside hitter Eleni Tsaparakis (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk HS) and junior middle hitter Cami Ascher (Natick, MA/Natick HS) added six kills apiece. Sophomore setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) added 18 assists.
"I was very pleased with our start, and with the fact that we stayed focused," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "One of our goals was to get off to a good start, and we started off well in all three games. We had 16 service aces, did a good job of taking them out of their offense, and we didn't make many service errors. Hopefully, we can build on this effort when we play Saturday."
The Corsairs improved to 1-0 with the victory, while the Lions fell to 0-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Mount Ida Saturday. Eastern Nazarene will host St. Joseph (CT) and MCLA Saturday.
