QUINCY, MA-Freshman setter Jessica Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had nine assists and eight service aces in her first collegiate match to help lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team to a three-game sweep of host Eastern Nazarene in their 2009 season opener at the Lions' campus gym Thursday evening.
The Corsairs were victorious, 25-19, 25-11 and 25-17.
Goncalves, who split time with fellow setter Katie Amalfi (So. Holliston, MA/Holliston HS), served four aces in a 10-0 run during the second game as the Corsairs took a commanding 20-9 lead. Amalfi finished with six assists.
Junior Eleni Tsaparakas (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk HS) led UMD with eight kills, sophomore Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS) added five and senior Amanda Langfield (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS) contributed four. Sophomore Shannon Brodie (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) had seven digs, Mastrocola added six and Langfield had two blocks.
"Our serving game was critical for us," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "We had 15 aces, and had we not passed well and served well, we could have been in trouble. We played solidly, but where we have a few places where we need to improve. We played with intensity, our communication was outstanding, and it was a good way to start the season."
The Corsairs improved to 1-0 with the victory, while the Lions fell to 0-1 with the defeat. UMD will visit Mount Ida Saturday.
