Sept. 12, 2009

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team won both of their matches on the second and final day of competition at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational at the Tripp Athletic Center Saturday. The Corsairs defeated Regis in three games, 25-12, 26-24 and 25-23, then downed Framingham State in three, 25-17, 25-22 and 25-19

In the opener, the Corsairs utilized their entire squad. "We pulled our first unity after the first game, an we were behind the entire time in the second game and then pulled it out," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "I wanted them to be able to win that game as a group, and it was nice to see them do it. We were solid in the area of serve reception, making only two receiving errors during the match."

Freshman setter Jessica Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) led UMass Dartmouth with 14 assists, playing the first and third games, while sophomore Katie Amalfi (Holliston, MA/Holliston HS) had six assists in game two. Eleven players recorded kills, with sophomore outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS), junior outside hitter Eleni Tsaparakis (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk HS), and senior middle blocker Amanda Langfield (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS) leading the way with four apiece.

Goncalves had 21 assists and five service aces against the Rams, Tsaparakis had nine kills, sophomore libero Shannon Brodie (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) had 11 digs, and sophomore middle blocker Cami Ascher (Natick, MA/Natick HS) had three blocks. Goncalves was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, while Tsaparakis joined her on the All-Tournament Team.

"It was great to win the tournament," said DeRossi. "Jess had a great tournament, and got all but one vote from the coaches. Hopefully, this will put us in a good frame of mind for next week's matches."

UMass Dartmouth improved to 7-0 with the wins, while Regis dropped to 3-6 and Framingham State is 4-6. The Corsairs will travel to Keene State to play the Owls and Western Connecticut State next Saturday.
