NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team earned their ninth consecutive sweep at the start of the season, blanking visiting Pine Manor, 25-11, 25-15 and 25-23, in a non-conference match at the Tripp Athletic Center Thursday evening.
Junior outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS) led UMass Dartmouth with nine kills as the Corsairs got all of their players some experience. "(Freshman) Cat O'Loughlin (Randolph, MA/Cardinal Spellman) saw her first action, (freshman) Asia Strothers (Wareham, MA/Wareham HS) also got out there, and (freshman) Bianca Cabral (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) had an opportunity to run the show in the third game," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "Our players who came off the bench played extremely well, they were down, 22-16, and came back to win, 25-23."
Sophomore setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) finished with 18 assists, while Strothers added three blocks. Junior middle blocker Kaitlin Hogan (Tewksbury, MA/Shawsheen Tech) had four kills and five service aces. "We had a solid serving match, and it was definitely a solid win. It will help us get prepared for our first league match this weekend."
The Corsairs improved to 0-0 with the victory, while the Gators fell to 2-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when play Southern Maine and Worcester State at Southern Maine Thursday. Pine Manor will host St. Joseph's (Maine) and Lasell Saturday.
