NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team won both of their matches in a three-way match at the Tripp Athletic Center Saturday.
The Corsairs opened their Little East Conference schedule with a 25-8, 25-9, 25-9 victory over Southern Maine, then defeated Worcester State, 25-23, 25-18, 25-27 and 25-10. Worcester State defeated Southern Maine, 25-12, 25-8 and 25-7.
Against the Huskies, senior outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS) led the attack with seven kills, while senior middle blocker Cami Ascher (Natick, MA/Natick HS) added seven. Junior setter jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had 22 assists.
The Corsairs came back twice against the Lancers, overcoming a 23-20 deficit in the first set and rallying from 20-15 to tie the third set at 25-25 before falling. Mastrocola had 24 kills and five blocks, Ascher had 11 kills and Goncalves had 27 assists and four service aces.
"We had a lot more experience than Southern Maine, and we were determined to play better than we did Thursday against Roger Williams," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi."Against Worcester State, Allie had an outstanding match, as did Cami, and we went to both of them often. Two of Jess' service aces came at critical times, and helped us break their momentum."
The Corsairs are now 8-2 and 1-0 in the Little East Conference, while Southern Maine is 0-4 and 0-1 in LEC play, and Worcester State is 5-6. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Colby-Sawyer Tuesday night. Southern Maine will host the University of New England Thursday. Worcester State will visit Bay Path Tuesday.
