NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team rallied in the fifth game to defeat visiting Simmons, 25-19, 25-21, 17-25, 20-25 and 15-12, in their non-conference match at the Tripp Athletic Center Tuesday evening.
After winning the first two games, the Corsairs dropped games three and four and fell behind, 3-0, in the fifth game before rallying for the win.
Junior setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had 31 assists and 12 digs for UMass Dartmouth. Senior outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS) led the Corsairs with 16 kills, while senior middle blocker Cami Ascher (Natick, MA/Natick HS) added 12. Senior libero Shannon Brodie (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) led the defensive effort with 13 digs.
"We played really well in the first two games, but I wasn't thrilled by our focus and intensity in the next two. But, after falling behind, we didn't fold, and we came back and got a quality win. Our serve receive was greatly improved. Allie (Mastrocola) and Shannon (Brodie) had 24 and 23 quality passes, respectively."
The Corsairs improved to 9-4 with the victory, while the Sharks fell to 11-3 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action at the Johnson & Wales Invitational Friday. Simmons will host Southern Vermont Thursday.
