CHESTNUT HILL, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team got off to a good start and breezed to a three-game victory against host Pine Manor in a non-conference match at the Pine Manor Gymnasium Tuesday evening. The Corsairs won 25-5, 25-18 and 25-23.
Nine players recorded kills for UMass Dartmouth, with the leader being freshman middle hitter Liandra Pellegrini (Canton, MA/Canton HS) leading the way with five. Sophomore setter Katie Amalfi (Holliston, MA/Holliston HS) had 15 assists, while freshman setter Jessica Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) contributed 11. Sophomore libero Stacey Miner (Greenfield, MA/Greenfield HS) had five digs, and the Corsairs recorded 14 service aces. Junior outside hitters Eleni Tsaparakis (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk HS) and Lauren Safioleas (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) each had three.
"We went with our first unit in the first game, and then we cleared the bench and gave everyone a chance to play," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "We got win number 10, which is good, going into a very difficult weekend at the Johnson & Wales Tournament."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 10-2 with the victory, while Pine Manor dropped to 1-9 with the defeat. The Corsairs will travel to the Johnson & Wales Invitational this weekend.
