Oct. 3, 2009

PROVIDENCE, RI-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team split a pair of matches on the second and final day of action at the Johnson & Wales Invitational at the Harborside Recreation Center Saturday afternoon.

The Corsairs lost to the host Wildcats in four games, 25-15, 19-25, 25-10, and 26-24, and then defeated Suffolk in three games, 25-19, 25-23 and 25-18.

Sophomore outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS) had 33 kills in the two games, and added eight kills against the Wildcats. Freshman setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had 45 assists in the two matches, and added 10 digs against Johnson & Wales, while sophomore libero Shannon Brodie (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) had 20 digs in each match. Mastrocola represented UMass Dartmouth on the All-Tournament Team.

"In the first match, I really thought we were going to push it to a fifth game," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "We started solidly, they made a couple of fantastic plays, we made a couple of bad plays, and that was that. The second game was one of the better games that we've played. In the second match, we jumped on Suffolk, then they crept back, and we had to come back to win."

UMass Dartmouth is now 11-5, while Johnson & Wales is now 10-12 and Suffolk is now 5-11. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference match Tuesday evening.
