NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team defeated visiting Suffolk, 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-17), in a non-conference match at the Tripp Athletic Center Thursday evening.
Sophomore setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had 27 assists, while five Corsairs tallied five or more kills each. Senior outside hitter Eleni Tsaparakis (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk HS) and junior outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/ Case HS) led the way with seven kills each, while junior middle hitter Cami Ascher (Natick, MA/Natick HS), senior outside hitter Lauren Safioleas (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) and freshmen Asia Strothers (Wareham, MA/Wareham HS) each had five.
"One of our goals for today was to keep Suffolk `O.O.S.' [Out of System], because our scouting reports showed that if we could pressure their serve receive, that was one of their weak points, which then made it difficult for the setter to get good balls to the outside hitters, making them less effective," said Corsairs Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "The team has done everything I've asked of them, I was nervous going into this one after the way we played against the 25th ranked team in the nation, we might take a step back but we still played with a lot of focus and energy," continued DeRossi. "Next, we have a big non-league matchup against Clark, which will be a tough road game for us against a quality opponent."
The Corsairs improved to 18-5 with the victory, while the Rams dropped to 8-14 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Clark Saturday. Suffolk will host St. Joseph (CT) and Rivier Saturday. .
