BOSTON, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team rallied from a 1-0 deficit to defeat host Wentworth in their non-conference match at Tansey Gymnasium Thursday evening. The Corsairs were victorious, 16-25, 25-20, 25-19 and 25-20.
For UMass Dartmouth, sophomore setter Bianca Cabral (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) had 40 assists, senior middle blocker Cami Ascher (Natick, MA/Natick HS) led the way with 20 kills, and senior outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS) had 13 kills. Senior libero Shannon Brodie (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) led the defensive effort with 19 digs, while Mastrocola had 17, and senior middle blocker Kaitlin Hogan (Tewksbury, MA/Shawsheen Tech) had four blocks.
"We gave away too many points in the first set," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "After that, our focus was greatly improved, we made fewer mistakes, and our hitting was solid. They were a much better team than they have been the last couple of years. Shannon played very well in the back row, and Allie and Cami hit very well."
The Corsairs improved to 13-12 with the victory, while the Leopards fell to 12-13 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Keene State and Clark in a tri-match Saturday.
