NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team defeated visiting Eastern Connecticut State, 3-1 (25-11, 25-13, 20-25, 25-22), in a Little East Conference match at the Tripp Athletic Center Tuesday evening.
Junior middle blocker Cami Ascher (Natick, MA/Natick HS) led the Corsairs with 11 kills during the contest, while senior outside hitter Eleni Tsaparakis (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk HS) and junior middle blocker Suzanne Landry (Tiverton, RI/Tiverton HS/CCRI) added 10 kills each. All three players also tallied four blocks. Sophomore setter Jessica Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had 32 assists in the match. Junior outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/ Case HS) had a team-high 11 digs and senior Lauren Safioleas (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) notched 10 digs in the win.
"Ascher played a monstrous match, not only leading us in kills and blocks, but it was the nature and timing of the kills and blocks that helped turn momentum around," said Corsairs Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "It was a solid win, we played similar to the game against UMass-Boston, we gritted out some tough points and Eastern Connecticut is better than their record shows," continued DeRossi. "This win put us in control of our destiny, if we can win against Western Connecticut that will guarantee us a home playoff match."
The Corsairs improved to 21-8 and 3-3 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Warriors dropped to 12-14 and 0-6 in LEC play with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Western Connecticut State Saturday. The Warriors will host Wesleyan Wednesday.
