DANBURY, CT-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team fell to host Western Connecticut State and then defeated John Jay in a pair of matches on the final day of the regular season at Feldman Arena Saturday.
UMass Dartmouth lost to the Colonials in three games, 25-15, 25-11 and 25-19, and then defeated the Bloodhounds, 25-6, 25-10 and 25-15.
Senior outside hitter Eleni Tsaparakis (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk HS) led the Corsairs with nine kills in the opener and six in the nightcap, sophomore setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had 14 assists in each match, junior libero Shannon Brodie (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) had 11 digs in the opener, and junior middle blocker Cami Ascher (Natick, MA/Natick HS) had three blocks against John Jay.
"We played a very tentative match against Western Connecticut, and their coach said that they played one of their best matches of the season, and the combination of the two didn't make it very competitive," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. Their energy level was higher than ours. We played better against John Jay. We have to come back to Western Connecticut on Tuesday, and, hopefully, it will be a blessing in disguise, and we'll come back really hungry."
The Corsairs are now 23-9 and 3-4 in the Little East Conference, while Western Connecticut State is 26-8 and 4-3 in LEC play, and John Jay is 8-25. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Western Connecticut once more in a first round Little East Conference playoff match Tuesday night.
