Volleyball Picked Fifth in Little East Conference

Aug. 17, 2011

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team has been picked to finish fifth in the annual Little East Conference pre-season poll.

The Corsairs received 29 points in the poll, four points ahead of sixth-place Eastern Connecticut State.

Defending champion UMass Boston was the unanimous choice to finish first with 64 points and all eight first place votes. Keene State, Plymouth State and Western Connecticut State occupied the next three places, with Rhode Island College and Southern Maine picked seventh and eighth, respectively.

"That's an honest reflection of how our team performed last year," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "We played all of our league matches really tough, including extending UMass Boston to five and having a lead late in the match. Last year, we played up to our potential and did everything that we were capable of doing. When you do a poll, you base it on past performance, and it's realistic to take where they think we will finish and try to beat it. I know the league will be difficult this year."

The Corsairs finished 23-10 overall last year. UMass Dartmouth will begin their 2011 home schedule when they host the UMass Dartmouth Invitational September 9th and 10th.
