NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team hopes that the second time is the charm when they visit Western Connecticut State in a first round Little East Conference volleyball match at Feldman Arena Tuesday evening.
The match is a rematch of the final LEC match of the regular season, when host WCSU defeated UMass Dartmouth in three games Saturday. The Colonials are the fourth seed and come in with a 26-8 overall record and a 4-3 LEC mark, while UMD, the fifth seed, is 23-9 and 3-4 in the Little East.
"I always like second playing a team the second time around," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "If you don't perform well the first time around, there is a chance to redeem yourselves. The results may or may not be the same, but we will be focused. We rely on five people to hit the ball and one to set, and most of our hitters had a below average performance Saturday. The first year I was here, we played them extremely well in the first round of the LEC playoffs, and it was the second time we had played them."
DeRossi said that they key to winning begins in the back row. "It's got to start with serve receive," said DeRossi. "We didn't have as many options on offense as we usually do. When your serve reception is better, the setter has more options, and you can run a quicker tempo on offense."
Rhode Island College will visit Plymouth State in the other first round match. The winners will advance to the Final Four at UMass Boston this weekend.
