Two Corsairs Earn LEC Cross Country Honors
Freshman Katie Sheehan
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA- Two members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth cross country team have been honored by the Little East Conference.
Freshmen Katie Sheehan (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) and Eric Karstunen (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke HS) have been named the final LEC Rookie Runners of the Week for the 2011 season.
Sheehan led the UMass Dartmouth women at last Saturday's NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championships at Bowdoin, finishing 61st overall with a time of 23:07 for the 6000 meter race. Eric Karstunen (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke HS) paced the Corsair men, finishing 150th overall in 27:39 for the 10,000 meter course.
"In probably the biggest race of her life, she produced what arguably was the best race of her career," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jon Hird. "That backs up her race in the Alliance Championship two weeks ago, when she ran just about as well. She's been a leader for us, and for someone with the relaxed cross country background that she had in high school, she's done a great job."
"Eric also back up the kind of race he ran at the conference meet with another fine race at the NCAA Regionals," said Hird. "He came up with his best race of the year at just the right time. We didn't have our number one runner, and he really took over that role. His races have been getting better through the year, but his race on Saturday was by far his best effort. Eric just puts his head down and keeps running hard, there's nothing fancy about what he does, and that's sort of emblematic of how our team has run. When you run your best at the end of the season, that's good."
The regional competition was the final action of the season for the Corsairs.
