NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team built a four-run lead and held off visiting Newbury, 7-6 in a non-conference game at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Tuesday.

After taking a 2-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by senior first baseman Alex Chetelat (Farmington, CT/Farmington HS).and an error in the top of the first inning, the Nighthawks increased their lead to 3-0 when Chetelat drove in a run with a fielder's choice in the top of the third.

The Corsairs came back with five runs in their half of the third to take the lead. Freshman left fielder Mike LaFlamme (Bedford, NH/Bedford HS/Tampa) drove in two runs with a single, freshman first baseman Alex Newton (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy/Franklin Pierce) drove in two more with a triple, and senior catcher Matt Worden (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) capped the rally with an RBI single.

UMD increased its lead with two runs in the fifth. Newton drove in a run with a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch.

Newbury came back with three in the eighth. Freshman shortstop Corey Keane (Tolland, CT/Tolland HS) doubled home two runs and scored on an RBI single by freshman second baseman Cameron D'Agostino (Salisbury, MA/Triton Regional HS). But freshman left-hander Josh Rebello (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS/Tiffin) got junior right fielder Matthew Clawson (Tolland, CT/Tolland HS) to ground out, and senior right-hander Pat Lavey (Cranston, RI/Cranston East HS) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his fourth save.

"Josh did a great job keeping them off-balance with his off speed stuff," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Prince. "He did a good job of upsetting the rhythm of their hitters, which allowed us to come back and take the lead. Alex Newton had a good day, swinging the bat well and swinging it with confidence. We gave up some runs early, but we showed some nice resilience coming back and scoring."

Rebello, who relieved freshman starter Nick Carafa (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield HS/Southern New Hampshire) in the third inning, pitched six innings to earn the win and improve to 1-1. Newbury senior starter Jorge Pimentel (Winsted, CT/The Gilbert School) took the loss and fell to 1-1.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 11-7 with the victory, while Newbury dropped to 13-11 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Worcester State Thursday. Newbury will visit Elms Thursday.
