MILTON, Mass. -- Four Corsair players record double-digit point totals to help boost the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's basketball team over Curry College in a non-conference matchup on Thursday evening, 77-64.
The Corsairs improve their overall record to 9-5 on the season, while the Colonels continue their struggles and drop to 2-11.
UMass Dartmouth was led by sophomore Wale Abraham (Lynn, Mass.) who recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Ryan Walsh (North Dighton, Mass.) also added 16 points. Abi Akanni (Fitchburg, Mass.) and junior Jake Laga (Northampton, Mass.) recorded 15 and 11 points, respectively, while freshman Tucker Bouchard (Kingston, Mass.) reeled in 10 caroms.
Curry senior captain Lambros Papalambros (Quincy, Mass.) scored a game-high 34 points to surpass 1,000 career points. Junior Antonio Jones (Dorchester, Mass.) contributed 15 points, while senior Thomas McLean (Paxton, Mass.) pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
UMass Dartmouth led the contest the entire way, with their biggest lead coming in the opening frame at 1:45 after a made layup by Abraham. The Colonels got a pair of free throws from freshman Kenneth Ramos (Dorchester, Mass.) to cut the lead to 10 (39-29), but the Corsairs reached intermission with a 40-29 edge.
Sophomore Akanni opened the second half for the Corsairs by draining a three-pointer to extend the visitor's lead to 43-29. Curry began to chip away at the lead after back to back layups by freshman Paul Preziosi (Quincy, Mass.) at 14:28, cutting the deficit to eight. The Colonels continued to inch closer until the Corsairs lead was reduced to two points (62-60) at 5:33 on a Papalambros layup. However that was as close as the hosts would come as UMass Dartmouth outscored Curry 15-4 over the game's final five minutes.
The Corsairs return to play on Saturday when they host Little East Conference rival Keene State at 3:00 p.m.
