DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Sophomore Adam Seablom (Lakeville, Mass.) scored a career-high 26 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out five assists to lead UMass Dartmouth to an 87-60 Little East Conference men’s basketball victory over Castleton Saturday afternoon at the Tripp Athletic Center.
The host Corsairs (7-3, 2-1 LEC) used a stifling press in the opening 6:10 of action, as UMass Dartmouth converted nine turnovers by the visiting Spartans (1-6, 0-2 LEC) into 18 points en route to a 24-3 advantage. The Corsairs blistered the nets at a 54 percent clip (19-35) in the first half to take a 50-26 edge at the break, as the hosts scored 28 total points off of 19 Castleton turnovers and converted 20 offensive rebounds in 21 second chance points on the afternoon.
Seablom connected for five of UMass Dartmouth’s 11 three-pointers on the day, as fellow sophomore Marcus Azor (Brockton, Mass.) added 17 points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists for the winners. Sophomore Matt Valles (Fairhaven, Mass.) and freshman Taylor Carlson (Wareham, Mass.) each added 10 points off the bench for the Corsairs, who received six points each and a combined 15 rebounds from junior Jake Ashworth (Fairhaven, Mass.) and sophomore Harry Alexander (Washington, D.C.). The hosts shot 48 percent (34-71) overall and held a 47-23 rebounding advantage for the contest, as UMass Dartmouth recorded 24 assists and amassed nearly half of its point total (40) in the paint.
Junior Terrin Roy (Lawrence, N.Y.) came off the bench to score 19 points (including four three-pointers) in the setback for Castleton, which received eight points from senior Casey Belade (Shelton, Conn.). The Spartans shot 44 percent (21-48) from the field and canned eight three-pointers, but the visitors snared only three offensive rebounds compared to the Corsairs’ 20.
UMass Dartmouth will be idle until Thursday, December 19th when the Corsairs take on Case Western Reserve in opening round play of the 2019 HoopMia D3 Holiday Shootout in Miami Shores, Fla. that tips-off at 8:00 pm, while Castleton hosts Fitchburg State in a non-league outing on Tuesday evening in Castleton, Vt. that tips-off at 7:00 pm.
