PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Junior Keyshaun Jacobs (Lynn, Mass.) and freshman Shion Darby (Peekskill, N.Y.) each scored 31 points to lead Rhode Island College to a 92-69 Little East Conference men’s basketball victory over UMass Dartmouth Wednesday evening at the Murray Center.
The host Anchormen (7-1, 1-0 LEC) used a 17-6 run over the final 7:16 of the opening half to take a 47-28 advantage at the break, as Jacobs canned seven of Rhode Island College’s 11 three-pointers to propel the hosts to a 33-15 scoring edge from behind the arc. Darby added seven rebounds and five assists for the Anchormen, who received a double-double effort of 13 points and 16 boards from senior Benjamin Vezele (Providence, R.I.) along with nine points from sophomore Deyshawn Tengbeh (East Providence, R.I.). Rhode Island College shot 46 percent (31-68) from the field overall and connected for 19 free throws, including 12 by Darby.
Sophomore Marcus Azor (Brockton, Mass.) scored 12 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out five assists in the setback for the visiting Corsairs (6-3, 1-1 LEC), who received 12 points and eight boards from fellow sophomore Sean Leahy (Hanson, Mass.). Sophomore Adam Seablom (Lakeville, Mass.) and junior Jake Ashworth (Fairhaven, Mass.) combined for 17 points, seven assists and six caroms for UMass Dartmouth, which shot 39 percent (29-73) from the floor and held a 43-42 rebounding advantage for the contest.
UMass Dartmouth hosts Castleton in a Little East Conference clash on Saturday afternoon at the Tripp Athletic Center that tips-off at 2:00 pm, while Rhode Island College heads to Plymouth, N.H. on Saturday afternoon to take on Plymouth State in a Little East outing that tips-off at 3:00 pm.
