KEENE, NH-Host Keene State outscored the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's basketball team, 45-20 during them final 17 minutes of the first half, took a 55-27 halftime lead, and went on to defeat the Corsairs, 92-55, in the Little East Conference opener for both teams at Spaulding Gymnasium Saturday.
The Owls made 57.9 per cent of their shots in the first half and limited UMass Dartmouth to 29 per cent in building their halftime advantage. For the game, KSC made 34 of 68 shots from the field for 50 per cent to UMD's 19 of 69 for 27.5 per cent, outrebounded the Corsairs, 49-42, and made 18 of 28 free throws to 13 of 18 for UMass Dartmouth.
Senior center Lance Greene (Dorchester, MA/Charlestown HS/UMass Lowell) led the Corsairs with 14 points and seven rebounds, while freshman center Alex Rodrigues (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) added 13 points. Ryan Martin led the Owls with 15 points, Derek D'Amours and Ollie Hunter each had 14, and Eric Fazio had 11.
"Keene State simply outplayed us," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. "They shot the ball well, and we stood around and watched on defense, and took quick shots that didn't go in. They made some tough shots early in the game, and when they got us down, we didn't respond as well as we needed to. We just didn't respond well enough to get back into the game."
The Corsairs dropped to 3-3 and 0-1 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while the Owls improved to 5-1 and 1-0 in LEC action with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Worcester State Tuesday evening.
