Men's Basketball Ranked Third in First Regional Poll

Feb. 5, 2009

INDIANAPOLIS, IN-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's basketball team is ranked third in the first NCAA Division III regional poll of the 2008-09 season.

The Corsairs are ranked third in the Northeast Region, behind WPI and Middlebury. They are ahead of Elms and Salem State, and then followed by MIT, Colby, Rhode Island College, Amherst and Bridgewater State. The poll is significant because it is the basis of the rankings used to invite teams to the NCAA Division III Championships at the end of the season.

"I'm glad we're in the top three," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. "We won again last night, after the poll came out. Hopefully, we can continue to move up in the polls, and secure a good ranking at the end of the season."

The Corsairs are tied with Rhode Island College in the Little East Conference, with each team having one conference loss. "Our team is playing great," said Baptiste. "As a team, it's really hard to play fast like we do. You expend a lot of energy game in and game out. We're really working hard at it."

UMass Dartmouth is 18-2 overall, and 8-1 in the LEC. The Corsairs will return to action Saturday when they host perennial conference power Keene State in the second game of an LEC doubleheader.
