Football Edged by Mount Ida, 21-20

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Visiting  Mount Ida scored twice in the third quarter to take the lead and held off the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's football team, 21-20, in the 2013 season opener for both teams at Cressy Field Friday night.

After the Mustangs went ahead, the Corsairs battled back, scoring and cutting the lead to a single point, 21-20, on a four-yard pass from freshman quarterback Cullen Hanna (Richmondville, NY/Cobleskill Central/University of Rochester) to sophomore wide receiver Abiola Aborishade (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) with 2:38 remaining in the third quarter. But the Corsairs, who missed all three of their extra point attempts, were unable to tie the score when freshman Steve Trask's (Billerica, MA/Billerica HS) PAT was blocked by sophomore linebacker Zach Samiljjan (Sparta, NJ/Lenape Valley HS), and Mount Ida held the lead the remainder of the way.

UMD struck first, taking the lead with 9:05 left in the first quarter on a five-yard run by sophomore running back Anthony LaRose (Canton, MA/Canton HS/AIC). But Trask's kick was blocked by Mount Ida sophomore linebacker Dominique Spaulding (West Hartford, CT/Conard HS).

The Corsairs doubled their lead early in the second quarter when senior linebacker Joe Teixeira (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) hit junior quarterback Jawad Yatim (Shrewsbury, MA/Assumption HS) and forced a fumble that senior linebacker Jordan McDonald (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) recovered and took all the way from 40 yards out. The snap on the PAT went awry, and a pass by junior defensive back Wayne Bolz (Billerica, MA/Billerica HS) failed to connect.

Mount Ida got on the board when Yatim ran a keeper on second and four at the UMD 13, was hit and fumbled forward into the end zone, where teammate Kenny Jean (Sr. WR Dorchester, MA/Brighton HS) recovered for a touchdown with 6:43 left in the half. Freshman kicker Nick Muccia (Jefferson, NJ/Jefferson Township) converted.

The Corsairs went up just before halftime when a snap sailed out of the end zone for a safety with 3:09 left in the first half.

Mount Ida scored twice in the third quarter. Yatim scored on a two yard run with 8:20 left in the third quarter, and again on a seven-yard keeper less than two minutes later. Muccia converted twice to make it 21-14.

"That was a very experienced team that we played, and I like the way we fought," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Mark Robichaud. "As I said, we're a young team, and we have to avoid mental mistakes. We have a week off, so it's back to camp. We are going to get better everywhere."

Freshman quarterback Trent Barneys (Avenel, NJ/Colonia HS) led UMD with 41 yards rushing, while Hanna hit five of 12 passes for 58 yards. Sophomore running back Melquan Pinkney Springfield, MA/Putnam HS) gained 53 yards on the ground for Mount Ida, while Yatim added 47 while completing 10 of 21 passes for 135 yards.

Teixera, McDonald. sophomore linebacker Derek Tarpey( Tewksbury, MA/Tewksbury HS) and senior linebacker Jordan Guyton (Canton, MA/Canton HS (Saint Anselm) each had eight tackles for the Corsairs, while sophomore linebacker DeAndre Lawrence (Middletown, CT/Springfield College) and junior defensive back Jovan Wilkins (Poughkeepsie, NY/Poughkeepsie HS) each made seven tackles for the Mustangs.

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 0-1 with the defeat, while Mount Ida improved to 1-0 with the victory. The Corsairs will take next weekend off and visit Westfield State two weeks from Saturday. Mount Ida will host Plymouth State next Saturday.
