DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Senior Tom Sheran (Marstons Mills, Mass.) fired a final round two-over 74 to lead the UMass Dartmouth men’s golf squad to the team title of the 2019 Lafrance Hospitality Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Allendale Country Club.
Sheran and freshman Curtis Merritt (Wareham, Mass.) set the pace for the Corsairs by posting identical two-day totals of 154 that were good for seventh place in a field of 75 competitors, as Merritt followed up his opening round of 76 by firing a six-over 78 in rain-soaked and windy conditions throughout. Senior Jackson Mitchell (Marion, Mass.) finished in a tie for 19th place with a two-day total of 159, while senior Austin Alves (Rochester, Mass.) and freshman Jack McDonald (New Bedford, Mass.) rounded out UMass Dartmouth’s scoring with respective totals of 160 and 161 that tied for 22nd and 25th place.
The Corsairs posted a team score of 623 to best runner-up Husson’s mark of 628, as Roger Williams and Springfield tied for third place with identical scores of 633. The title was UMass Dartmouth’s first in its home event since 2013.
Johnson & Wales finished as the Spring Cup Series champion in a season-long competition involving events hosted by the Wildcats, Corsairs and Rhode Island College, as the Wildcats finished tied with Western New England for eighth place in this weekend’s final standings.
