GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Curtis Merritt (Wareham, Mass.) fired an eight-over par two-day total of 150 to lead the UMass Dartmouth golf team to a runner-up performance at the eight-team Southern Maine Fall Classic that concluded Monday afternoon at the Gorham Country Club.
Merritt posted rounds of 75 on each day of the event for the Corsairs, who posted identical team totals of 308 in each round to finish with a two-day score of 616 that was topped only by the host Huskies’ mark of 607. UMass Dartmouth edged out Bowdoin (617) for the second place position, while Saint Joseph’s (619) and the University of New England (620) finished in the respective fourth and fifth place spots.
Senior Tom Sheran (Marstons Mills, Mass.) finished a stroke behind Merritt with a two-day score of 75-76-151 for the Corsairs, while senior Jackson Mitchell (Marion, Mass.) followed at 75-77-152. Junior Nick Avilla (Westport, Mass.) and freshman Garrett Lane (Tewksbury, Mass.) rounded out UMass Dartmouth’s quintet by firing identical scores of 167, as Bowdoin’s Tom Dunleavy took individual medalist honors with a five-over total of 147 on the par 71 layout.
UMass Dartmouth heads to Sutton, Mass. this weekend to compete for its second Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship in school history, as action gets underway at the Blackstone National Golf Club on Saturday morning.
