WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Freshman Paul Frys’ (Portland, Ore.) goal 6:45 into the third period proved to be the game-winner that lifted Westfield State to a 2-1 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference ice hockey victory over UMass Dartmouth Tuesday afternoon at Amelia Park Ice Arena.
The host Owls (8-5-2, 5-3 MASCAC), who extended their winning streak to five straight with the triumph, trailed by a 1-0 margin after sophomore Eric Bolden (Oswego, Ill.) staked the visiting Corsairs (7-8-1, 4-4-1 MASCAC) to the early lead with his 11th goal of the season 12:38 into the contest. Westfield State evened matters on freshman Jake Ratcliffe’s (Canterbury, New Zealand) power play tally with 53 seconds remaining in the middle stanza to set up Frys’ heroics, as he converted a feed from junior Daniel Backstrom (Helsinki, Finland) on the game-winner.
Backstrom and senior Lenny Caglianone (Matawan, N.J.) assisted on Ratcliffe’s second period marker for the Owls, and junior Thierry Messervier (Montreal, Que.) made that stand up with 34 saves in goal to earn the win for the hosts. Sophomore Parker Butler (Summit, N.J.) made 31 stops in net for UMass Dartmouth, which saw its three-game unbeaten streak end in the setback. The Corsairs outshot Westfield State by a 35-33 margin overall, but the Owls held a 27-25 edge in faceoff wins for the contest.
UMass Dartmouth and Westfield State will meet in the back end of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference home-and-home set on Thursday evening at Hetland Arena that faces off at 7:30 pm.
