FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Freshman Anthony Ceolin’s (Simsbury, Conn.) goal 1:02 into overtime lifted Fitchburg State to a 2-1 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference ice hockey victory over UMass Dartmouth Thursday evening at the Wallace Civic Center.
The two teams were locked in a scoreless draw 48 minutes into the contest before junior Eric Bolden (Oswego, Ill.) staked the visiting Corsairs (2-7, 2-3 MASCAC) to a 1-0 lead on a feed from senior Steven Leonard (Rockaway Park, N.Y.), but the host Falcons (5-2-1, 3-1-1 MASCAC) evened matters with 2:39 remaining in regulation on freshman Adam Kusior’s (Tecumseh, Ont.) marker. Ceolin provided the heroics in the extra session, as he took a pass from senior Dean Zerby (Harrisburg, Pa.) on the golden goal that gave Fitchburg State its triumph.
Zerby also set up Kusior’s tying tally for the Falcons, as junior Brian McGrath (Worcester, Mass.) stopped 32 of 33 shots to earn the win in net for the hosts. Freshman Daniel Davidson (Surrey, B.C.) made a career-high 35 saves in suffering the tough-luck setback between the pipes for UMass Dartmouth, as Fitchburg State outshot the Corsairs by a 37-33 margin in a contest that saw the visitors hold a 36-29 edge in the faceoff circle.
UMass Dartmouth travels to Westfield, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Westfield State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference outing that faces off at 5:35 pm, while Fitchburg State heads to Worcester, Mass. on Saturday evening for a MASCAC matchup with Worcester State that faces off at 8:00 pm.
