Vertentes Provides Late Heroics In Ice Hockey's 3-3 Draw At Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass. --  Sophomore Josh Vertentes’s (Rehoboth, Mass.) goal with four seconds remaining in regulation lifted UMass Dartmouth to a 3-3 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference ice hockey overtime draw with Westfield State Saturday evening at Amelia Park Ice Arena.

The two teams played through a scoreless opening period before trading tallies in the first 6:43 of the middle stanza, as freshman Wyatt Lawrence (Sexmith, Alta.) staked the host Owls (4-3-3, 3-1-2 MASCAC) to the early advantage before senior Steven Leonard (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) evened matters for the visiting Corsairs (2-7-1, 2-3-1 MASCAC) with a power play marker.  UMass Dartmouth grabbed a 2-1 edge 4:23 into the third period on junior Eric Bolden’s (Oswego, Ill.) tally, but Westfield State rallied with two goals in 27 seconds late in the frame by sophomores Jake Ratcliffe (Canterbury, New Zealand) and Justin Alves (Woburn, Mass.) to take a 3-2 lead with 2:45 remaining.  The visitors sent on an extra skater in the closing 66 seconds of action that resulted in Vertentes’s heroics set up by a Leonard feed, and the two squads skated through a scoreless extra session to account for the final margin.

Junior Dillon Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) set up Leonard’s second period goal in the tie for the Corsairs, as freshman Daniel Davidson (Surrey, B.C.) made 30 saves in net for UMass Dartmouth on the night.  Senior Francois-Xavier Girard (St. Lazare, Que.), sophomore Joseph Carbone (Marshfield, Mass.) and freshmen John-Michael DiGregorio (Montreal, Que.) and Andrew McCormick (Canton, N.Y.) registered helpers in the draw for the Owls, who received 36 stops from senior Thierry Messervier (Montreal, Que.) between the pipes.  The Corsairs outshot Westfield State by a 39-33 margin and held a 37-30 advantage at the faceoff circle for the contest.

UMass Dartmouth entertains UMass Boston in a non-league outing on Tuesday evening at Hetland Arena that faces off at 7:20 pm, while Westfield State travels to Worcester, Mass. on Thursday evening for a non-conference clash with Assumption that faces off at 7:00 pm.
