DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Senior midfielder Junior Monteiro (New Bedford, Mass.) netted a pair of goals, as UMass Dartmouth clinched a berth in the upcoming Little East Conference Men’s Soccer Championships with a 3-1 league victory over Castleton Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field.
Monteiro staked the host Corsairs (8-7-2, 3-4-1 LEC) to a 1-0 advantage in the 23rd minute with a blast from the right side off a feed from junior Yorik Sajbin (Fall River, Mass.), but the visiting Spartans (6-12, 2-6 LEC) evened matters less than seven minutes later after a foul in the box led to a penalty kick conversion by senior Jack Kingdon (Woodbury, Conn.). Sophomore Thiago DeCarvalho (Quincy, Mass.) restored UMass Dartmouth’s edge with 6:43 remaining in the opening half after lofting a shot from 20 yards out to the top right corner, and Monteiro provided an insurance marker for the Corsairs in the 57th minute on give-and-go passes from DeCarvalho and junior Rony Morales (Seekonk, Mass.) to account for the final margin.
Senior Danny Andrade (New Bedford, Mass.) picked up the win in goal with a five-save effort for UMass Dartmouth, while junior Alex Fernald (Phippsburg, Maine) recorded three stops in the setback for Castleton. The Corsairs outshot the Spartans by a 14-10 margin overall and held a 9-4 advantage in penalty kicks, as each team had six shots on goal for the contest.
UMass Dartmouth, which earned its first Little East post-season berth in six years with the triumph, is seeded sixth in the 2019 championships that begin on Tuesday with quarterfinal round action. Complete playoff pairings and sites will be announced by the conference on Saturday evening.
Today’s match marked the season finale for Castleton, which saw its three-match winning streak snapped.
