FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Goals by juniors Sean Nugent (Dracut, Mass.) and Gabriel Ramos (Chicopee, Mass.) in the final 20 minutes of play lifted Fitchburg State to a 2-1 non-league college men’s soccer victory over UMass Dartmouth Wednesday evening at Elliot Field.
The two teams battled to a scoreless draw at the break until junior Yorik Sajbin (Fall River, Mass.) gave the visiting Corsairs (4-3) a 1-0 lead 4:40 after intermission with his third goal of the season, but Nugent evened matters in the 70th minute for the host Falcons (3-3-1) after converting a feed from sophomore Raphael Coelho (Framingham, Mass.). Ramos provided the deciding tally six minutes later for Fitchburg State, as he took a pass from freshman Sebastian Pina (Somerville, Mass.) to cap the hosts’ comeback.
Junior Sebastian Jaramillo (Dracut, Mass.) picked up the win in goal with an eight-save effort for Fitchburg State, while senior Danny Andrade (New Bedford, Mass.) made three stops in the setback for UMass Dartmouth. The Corsairs outshot the Falcons by a 16-9 margin overall (9-5 on goal) and took eight of the nine corner kicks in the contest.
UMass Dartmouth hosts Plymouth State in a Little East Conference match on Saturday evening at Cressy Field beginning at 6:00 pm, while Fitchburg State heads to North Adams, Mass. on Friday evening for a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference clash with MCLA that also begins at 6:00 pm.
