DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Junior Yorik Sajbin (Fall River, Mass.) netted a hat trick to lead UMass Dartmouth to a 6-3 non-league college men’s soccer victory over Lesley Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field.
Goals by Sajbin and junior Tyler Medeiros (New Bedford, Mass.) in the opening 19:55 of play staked the host Corsairs (6-4) to a 2-0 lead at the break, and freshman Eric Barry’s (Framingham, Mass.) tally 8:51 after intermission extended that margin to 3-0. The visiting Lynx (4-7) closed back to within one on respective markers from juniors Jack Wadleigh (Glastonbury, Conn.) and AJ Genova (Groton, Conn.) in the 58th and 67th minutes, but senior midfielder Junior Monteiro’s (New Bedford, Mass.) breakaway conversion just 2:47 later gave UMass Dartmouth a 4-2 cushion. Wadleigh’s 73rd minute penalty kick enabled Lesley to again slice its deficit to one, but Sajbin sealed the hosts’ triumph by completing his hat trick with two goals in a 98 second span to account for the final margin.
Sajbin added an assist to finish with seven points in the win for the Corsairs, who received a four-point performance from Monteiro. Medeiros added a helper to his goal for a three-point effort for the hosts, which also received an assist from sophomore Goncalo Roias (Fall River, Mass.). Sophomore Chris Moussavi (Bellmore, N.Y.) made five saves to earn his first career victory in goal for UMass Dartmouth, while senior David Crutchfield (Shrewsbury, Mass.) also recorded five stops in the setback for Lesley. The Corsairs outshot the Lynx by an 18-10 margin overall (11-9 on goal) and held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks as part of the first-ever meeting between the two schools on the pitch.
UMass Dartmouth will be idle until next Saturday, October 12th when the Corsairs head to Gorham, Maine to take on Southern Maine in a Little East Conference outing beginning at 2:30 pm, while Lesley hosts Rivier in a non-league match on Monday evening in Cambridge, Mass. that begins at 8:00 pm.
