PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Goals by freshman Thomas Aldana (Providence, R.I.) and junior Kossivi Dogbey (Providence, R.I.) lifted third-seeded Rhode Island College to a 2-0 victory over sixth-seeded UMass Dartmouth in quarterfinal round play of the 2019 Little East Conference Men’s Soccer Championships Wednesday evening at LaSalle Academy.
The host Anchormen, who improve to 10-6-2 overall, advance to the Little East semifinal round to take on second-seeded Keene State on Friday evening at Ron Butcher Field in Keene, N.H. beginning at 7:00 pm. The visiting Corsairs, who were making their first conference playoff appearance in six years, close out their campaign at 8-8-2 overall.
Aldana gave Rhode Island College the only tally they would need in the 29th minute by converting a feed from sophomore Brandon Ramos (Boston, Mass.), who in turn set up Dogbey’s insurance marker in the 74th minute that accounted for the final margin. Junior Charlie Tashjian (West Warwick, R.I.) made that stand up in goal with a six-save performance to pick up the clean sheet triumph for the Anchormen.
Sophomore Jake Castro (Swansea, Mass.) made three stops in suffering the setback in net for UMass Dartmouth, which held a 10-9 edge in total shots and a 5-4 advantage in penalty kicks for the contest.
Friday’s other Little East semifinal matchup will see top-seeded and 23rd-ranked Eastern Connecticut hosting fourth-seeded Western Connecticut, and the two semifinals winners will meet for the conference tournament title on Sunday.
